Have you seen this refreshingly creative take on “walking down the aisle” that’s taken Youtube by storm?
I had a silly grin on my face when I finished watching this. (Thanks, Lisa) The production quality is low, the smiles are high and the music is turned way up. It’s perfect for YouTube.
There’s just one problem. It doesn’t matter how creative the idea is, how perfectly it’s executed, or how many views rack up on YouTube. The video only works because the song, “Forever” by Chris Brown, is the soundtrack and there’s no mention of a licensing agreement with Jive Records.
Within the next 500k views, a take-down request will most likely be submitted by Jive Records to YouTube and the happily married couple will face an “intro to disappointment” moment in their marriage. The reality is simple: they used a song in their production that they didn’t have rights to use. Is it hard to see such a fresh idea go to waste over such a stale notion? Sure. But that’s how the system works right now.
There’s one lesson to be learned here: Don’t limit the reach of your idea by ignoring necessary licensing procedures.
It’s a great video. Enjoy it while you can.

That's such a shame. It's a great video, and if anything it made me want to go out and buy the song. If Jive records were smart, they would keep it up. It's great advertising for them!

Perhaps. We're not at the point yet where the people who find the violations are willing/able/empowered to make such calls.
Wow. That was the most creative “walk down the aisle” I've ever seen. I loved it!
I hope that Jive Records realizes that it was one of the best free commercials for “Forever,” as it shows how the song inspires people proudly break from the traditional norm, dance and enjoy life. It certainly made *me* want to listen to the song again, and I'm not even a Chris Brown fan!
May Jive give a mere warning and send a bottle of champagne to the newlyweds instead of a lawsuit.
Heh. You never said lawsuit. I tend to see red over this sort of thing.
This video rocks… and is a far cry from the traditional Mendelssohn's march from a friend's wedding I attended last weekend.
Oh, and we are almost at the point where companies support (and endorse) unofficial uses. Coca-Cola is the shining example these days: http://www.insidefacebook.com/2009/03/18/how-do...
Fantastic! I hope their marriage is as great as the wedding. And I hope Jive Records recognizes the marketing potential of a creative use of Chris' music.
Saw it yesterday. Made me think. 1. They're lucky to have some pretty great friends. 2. Weddings are more fun than I remember. 3. The honeymoon will be over the top.
I'm fairly certain Jive Records is going to see this as good pub for Chris Brown and leave it alone. The couple never intended this to take off like it did. They put it up for friends and family. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32122519/ns/today-t...
They might be gaining a little notoriety, but beyond that – it's not like they're profiting from it.
I'd have to hope Jive Records would see that, and allow a little Joy to happen.
[...] Blogger Seth Simonds thinks this video’s days are numbered because of licensing issues related to the use of the song, but as I write this, the wedding video is still fueling a sensation. You can read Seth’s thoughts here: Check Out This Video While It’s Still on YouTube! [The Wedding Dance] [...]
Pretty cool and a bit of a tear jerker too when the bride turns up. Ah, weddings always make me cry but this one made me laugh too. I too think they'll be made to take it off the site but hopefully they'll play smart and make the most of the great free publicity. I'd never heard this song before (forgive me, I've been stuck in the jungle for a while) but that certainly got my attention and who knows, next time at itunes I may check out and even buy some more of CB's stuff. Cheers!
If it was just a stunt, it was well done. If it was just a family having fun, it was well done. If it was just a break from tradition, it was well done.
I smiled through the whole thing and it was not the music that made it so great. Put in a dozen other songs and it is still a gas. It is creativity like this that make the internet a fun place.
The true art of having fun.
@KimBrater
Music is the heartbeat of life. I hope Chris and Jive can rejoice in the joy and energy their sounds breathed into what is too often a stiff and stifled march down the aisle. It's such a happy vibrant scene. Let's hope legal haggling doesn't spoil the memory. Until I saw this I didn't know who Chris Brown was. I'm off to itunes to check it out. Aloha.
I love that vid and I am a metal fan! LOL
The song is catchy. And I agree with the others that Jive records should be
thanking this couple instead of suing them. A paid publicist could never have
dreamed up something this amazing! It is a good PR makeover for a bad boy
image.
Right now they are America's favorite newlyweds, I could see this backfiring
on Jive records. Imagine the hate mail they will get, the big mean company
who tried to ruin a couples joyous memories….and the joy of millions who felt
a part of it.
Really enjoyed this video and shared it with my family. My daughters loved the idea and, at least at their current ages of 18 and 21, thought it would be great to do something similar. I do feel bad about the song issue.. and wish the rules could be more relaxed, especially if there is not profit involved. They are not making money from this.. it was their wedding.. and it was unique.
It seems that CB is taking this all as a needed PR boost. I'm assuming CNN figured out licensing issues before they published their own copy of the video.
Alls well in the married woods, it would seem. =)
There's certainly something to be said for the video bringing CB's music to an audience he hadn't been able to reach before.
I suppose it'll only be a matter of time before “guerrilla marketers” begin using such videos as part of massive marketing campaigns?
Glad you enjoyed it!
You might just have a point there. A really great producer could probably sneak another song in quite nicely.
The Wedding Dance, remixed? =)
Creativity definitely makes the web a fun place. Thanks!
With the TV appearances, etc. The question of money has probably become more complicated.
So far, Jive seems to be letting this one slide. It's a great video and I'm thrilled that so many have taken joy in it.
It was definitely unique! =)
Haha, maybe they already did and are rubbing their hands with glee right now and watching the viewer stats with glee while CD sales go through the roof:)
Apparently everyone wins. Youtube monetizes the song for its content creator Chris Brown. Check out this post on Google's blog. http://bit.ly/a5RbN
